The Kings Gambit

By Reena

Girl: An ugly duckling like me could never compare
to the crown she wears upon her head.
I was foolish to dream you could ever be mine.
Go… your kingdom has already chosen for you.

King: My heart chose you long before my people
chose her. A king belongs to his kingdom before he
belongs to himself.

Girl: As expected, I put on a fake smile and wished
the King and his new Queen a lifetime of love.
I had no choice… that’s a commoner job.

King: No matter the ring that binds my Queen and
me, you’re still the one my heart longs for. Wait for
me not, and find a better life. So let this be the last
selfish thing I ever do… a kiss from me to you.
