The Nafs

By Farhia Jalil

When the night falls,
I go to the soft place where sleep should arrive.
Instead, I enter into the world full of thoughts.

Sometimes positive, sometimes negative.
While staring intensely at the ceiling with heavy eyes…
My heart said, “Let’s sleep,” but…

My head would just go with the same line over and over again…
“Let’s get lost in the mindmaze forever.”
While I know there’s no forever,
but what if I never get out of these sleepless nights?

Would it be so bad?
At least better than death, right?

And then?
The morning would arrive,
and me, just like the constant of the maths equation,
I would be still stuck in my mindmaze…
