A Chain of Events Due to a Bad Weather Report
the weatherman said sunshine on the weekend,
but the rain persisted Friday, Saturday,
and finally, Sunday
with poor vision
the old man waited until the weekend
for fairer conditions to drive into the town
he had rescheduled multiple appointments
while working around his cottage
and repairing his blue barn
which needed much attention
but today he finally decided
to pick up his test results from his doctor
who informed the old man
that he had only six months to live
stricken with the heavy news
the old-timer drove home
thinking about his wife
and how she would receive his misfortune
raindrops tapped furiously against his windshield
as he stopped at a traffic light
jaded by the glow of red
he released the brake pedal
when the light changed to green
in a flash
two brilliant beams of white light
reflected in his eyes
it was too late
the doctor’s prognosis
would not come to fruition
the judge sentenced the woman
to six years for vehicular manslaughter
the jury had found that it was an accident
partially due to the low visibility caused by the rain
she was released two years later
for good behavior
with one year of probation
on the day of her release
her daughters planned a welcome-home celebration
and baked their mother a beautiful cake
using eggs they bought
from an aged lonesome woman
living on the outskirts of town
“A DOZEN EGGS — $1”
said the hand-painted sign
outside a dilapidated blue barn.
