By The Poetic Land ✔
Bengali has some of the funniest writing ever put on paper, and most of it is on The Poetic Land, free. This list is all Bengali: Sukumar Ray’s nonsense verse (Tyansh Goru, Gonf Churi, Khuror Kol, Sat Patra, Kumropotash), his school story Pagla Dashu, Sukanta’s wedding-house rhyme, Rajanikanta Sen’s little fable and Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury’s laugh-out-loud folk tales. Each pick has a few lines from the original and a short note in English, and every title opens the full piece.
(The Tyansh Cow)
by Sukumar Ray Bengali Classic Poem
ট্যাঁশ্ গরু গরু নয়, আসলেতে পাখি সে;
The Tyansh Goru is not a cow at all, it is actually a bird, and anyone can go and see it at Haru's office. Pure Sukumar Ray nonsense, as funny today as when Abol Tabol first came out.
(The Stolen Moustache)
The calm head clerk suddenly decides that someone has stolen his moustache, and the whole office panics. Another Sukumar Ray classic that Bengali children know by heart.
(Hukomukho Hyangla)
Why does poor Hukomukho Hyangla never smile? Sukumar Ray’s nonsense rhyme about a gloomy fellow with two tails is pure fun for children and grown-ups alike.
(Uncle's Contraption)
Chandidas’s uncle invents a machine that hangs food in front of your nose so you run faster and faster to reach it. Sukumar Ray’s classic piece of nonsense, and a sharp joke about chasing things you never catch.
(A Worthy Groom)
A neighbour proudly lists the groom’s qualities: he looks like an owl, failed his matriculation nineteen times and is terribly poor. Sukumar Ray’s comic poem about arranged-marriage boasting still makes Bengali families laugh.
(Kumropotash)
খবরদার এসো না কেউ আস্তাবলের কাছে;
চাইবে নাকো ডাইনে বাঁয়ে চাইবে নাকো পাছে;
If the Kumropotash dances, do not go near the stable; if it cries, nobody sit on the roof. Sukumar Ray’s mysterious creature and its silly rules are pure Bengali nonsense verse at its best.
(Crazy Dashu)
Every boy in school knows 'crazy' Dashu, whose odd logic and pranks leave everyone confused. Sukumar Ray's school stories are the Bengali answer to every funny school film.
(Fun at the Wedding House)
একটি ধারে তৈরি হচ্ছে নানা রকম খাদ্য;
Shehnai, the smell of hot luchis, shouting relatives and a host welcoming everyone in. Sukanta Bhattacharya's rhyme about the noise, food and chaos of a Bengali wedding.
(The Glass Bottle and the Clay Lid)
নির্ম্মল আমার দেহ, স্বচ্ছ, পরিপাটি;
A shiny glass bottle mocks a humble clay lid, and the lid gives a perfect reply: drop us both and we both break, and you too are made of earth. A witty little fable in verse by Rajanikanta Sen.
(The Tailorbird and the Barber)
A tiny tailorbird gets a boil from dancing on a brinjal leaf, and when the barber refuses to help, she drags the king, the queen and half the kingdom into it. Upendrakishore’s folk tale is funny, fast and clever.
(The Tale of Old Panta-Buri)
A thief keeps eating old Panta-Buri’s rice, so she sets off to complain to the king, collecting a fish, a razor and a pile of dung on the way. A hilarious Bengali folk tale with a sweet revenge.
(The Tiger's Cook)
