নদী জানে না সে কত দূর যাবে,
তবু বয়ে চলে — আমিও তেমনি।

— a Bengali Heartline, The Poetic Land

Some feelings do not need a page. They need a breath, a line, perhaps two. Heartlines is our newest home for exactly that: short writings of two to four lines, from the heart, in the language you dream in.

What is a Heartline?

A Heartline is a complete piece in two to four lines. A longing, a memory, a small joy at the window, a prayer that fits in one breath. Each one is set on a clean card, black, yellow, red or white, with the writer’s name beneath it, made to be read in a moment and carried for much longer.

Five languages, five rooms

Heartlines lives in five languages, and each has a page of its own: Assamese (অসমীয়া), Bengali (বাংলা), Urdu (اردو), Hindi (हिन्दी) and English. Begin at the Heartlines hub, choose a language, and step into a room where every line speaks that tongue.

Read, swipe, share

On a language page the cards arrive one at a time. Swipe, or use the arrows, to move from one to the next; open Full screen when a line deserves silence around it; or follow a mood with tags such as #love, #longing, #hope, #homeland, #rain and #mother. Beneath every card are three small doors: Share, which turns the card into a ready-made image for your status or feed; Open, which takes you to the Heartline’s own page, with likes and comments; and Copy text. Further down, the whole collection waits in a grid.

Classics and originals

Every language opens with the voices that came before us: Kabir and Ghalib, Rabindranath Tagore and Jibanananda Das, Lakshminath Bezbaroa, Emily Dickinson. We include only poets whose work is now free for everyone to read, and each classic line has been checked against two published sources. Beside them sit new lines written for The Poetic Land. And soon, we hope, yours.

Write a Heartline

Have two lines that will not leave you alone? Open Write a Heartline. Choose your language, write two to four lines (up to 90 characters each), add up to three tags and pick the colour of your card. A live preview shows exactly how your Heartline will look, and how it will look when someone shares it.

Members send their lines with the name on their profile. Not a member yet? You can still write: guests fill in a short form with a few details about themselves. Every Heartline is read by our editors before it is published.

Now on the homepage

Heartlines also has its own slide in the homepage banner: black, with faint yellow ruled lines like a notebook page, and two doors, Read Heartlines and Write a Heartline. You will find Heartlines on the Explore page too, and inside the Assamese and Bengali Sanctuaries.
