Finding a purpose

By Sreelatha Chakravarty

THE HOOK: A philosophical short story in which a motionless ball symbolises the human mind, discovering purpose only when the unexpected winds of change finally set it in motion.

The ball lay there. It didn’t want to move. But it was round and made to be rolled. How long could it just lie there? Someone would touch it and it would roll. But that someone never materialised
So it just lay there. Sad.

The tool to get things going was invented out of boredom. Bored people get creative out of the sheer need to find excitement. How can we make peace with boredom?

Like really, truly believe that everything is fine and needs no improvement or change. Boredom asks for nothing.

The ball was bored but it did not feel it as an inadequacy or limitation. It felt alive as a ball. It didn’t question its own lack of movement. The tool to move it was not invented yet.

Then the wind blew strong. It moved.

The ball thought it had a purpose. The ball was the human brain. The winds of change always gives it a purpose.
