A Phantom in the Midnight

By Ahmed Hassan Imran

Last night I had a dream,

And silence tore into a scream.

Trapped in the heavy mud of sleep,

My frozen muscles failed to react;

The ink-black shadow on the move,

And I couldn’t outrun its track.

I fought with the shadow

And could not break the night;

I screamed within my mind-

No voices escaped.

Then fell through endless skies

And gasped awake in sweat,

Shaken awake from a restless night.
